summary report of my graduate design(1): the results of my graduate design
i have finished my graduate design around december 20th. unfortunately, it does not mean the start of good time in the rest of my senior life. my doctor tutor told me that since you had finished it you could start anthoer one…..
ok, falling behind begins with complaint. before taking a new task, i decide to make some summaries about what i’ve done these days. honestly speaking, i realy enjoy developing a median filter on FPGA for an amount of things that i’ve learnt. first, i want to show some results of my graduate design. during experimental period, my task is to realize a 3*3 median filter on Altera cycloneii EP2C20F484C8 FPGA. the expected outcome is that a small white joint spider can be properly filtered on a false data stream named the boat crossing a river. the reason for this funny name is that the souce of data is a group of black and white vertical bars with a white rectangle moving horizontally as fast as field sweeping. the following contents are my analysis. obviously, i have to make a joint spider. it is easy and the process is skipped.
the white joint spider is considered as the combination of many white chips for the convenience of analysis.

after my median filter, some parts of the spider above should be changed as the background while others stays the same. the red parts of spider in the following pictuer are the remaining parts based on my analysis.
then, i want to show the actual pictures that i get from a LCD display. the first one is the original picture with a joint spider.
the second one is the result of my median filter.
in my opinions, it shows that my design is correct. then, in the days that followed, i have to revise my design in order to apply it to the whole imaging processing system. two main points are different. a new control signal is added to the data source and the system is depended on the cyclone iii. however, when dealing with real-time images, it can not work as we expect. more specifically, it works correctly as a median filter but it can not solve the noise problems. at first, my senior fellow apprentices found many small noises on the real-time images and they thought it can be filtered through 3*3 median filters. however, it seems that it does not work. they admit that we should do some analysis of noise at the beginnig of our task.
