Word Preparation

witness: 亲眼目击

to see something happen, especially an accident or crime

I witnessed a horrible car accident on the freeway yesterday.
昨天我亲眼目睹高速公路上一场惨烈的车祸。

There were only a few people who witnessed what happened at the scene.
只有几个人目睹了当时的情况。

talk: 讲话，谈话

a speech or discussion

Are you interested in listening to the talk on how to be successful?
你对讲述如何成功的讲话感兴趣吗？

The man gave a talk about his trip to America.
这个人讲述了他的美国之旅。

motivational speaker: 离职演说家；励志大师

a person who gives speeches intended to motivate people to do sth.

I like listening to motivational speakers because they inspire me.
我喜欢听励志大师们的演讲，因为他们的话会鼓舞我。

The motivational speaker talked about his childhood experiences.
这位离职演说家讲述了自己的童年经历。

speaking event: 演讲

an event in which someone gives a speech to an audience

There is going to be a speaking event next Thursday.
下周四会有一场演讲。

There were five motivational speakers at the speaking event.
五位离职演说家亲临了演讲现场。

due to sth: 由于

because of something

Due to the cold, Amy was not able to go to the party with us.
Amy感冒了，因为她不能跟我们一起去参加聚会了。

Due to the storm, there will be no class today and tomorrow.
受此次暴风雨的影响，今明两天停课。

have time on one’s hands: 某人恰好有时间

I wish I could go, but I don’t have time on my hands.

Gary had a lot of time on his hands, so he went to the movies and saw two movies.

Grammar

present participle as adverbial (modifier)

动词的现在分词做状语，相当于状语从句；用于表示时间，原因，结果，条件，方式，让步，或者伴随情形，以及独立成分等。
注意： 作时间、原因、条件、让步状语时多位于句首；作结果，伴随情况时常位于句末。

  • Seeing those pictures, she remembered her childhood.
  • Hearing the good news, he jumped with joy.
  • She was so angry that she threw the toy on the ground, breaking it into pieces.
  • She came into the house, carrying a lot of books.
